At Juniper Ridge, we never, ever kill the plants we harvest from to make our products. We only harvest common species in the heart of their range, and we stick to trees and shrubs so that we're never killing a small plant. In other words, we don't go around yanking young, undeveloped plants out of the ground—we prune around large shrubs and trees that respond well to the pruning by putting on new grow the following year.
Our harvesting techniques are very basic. For trees (Cedar, Fir, Piñon, Juniper, and California Bay Laurel) we trim around the outside and bottom of trees. We always make a point of trying to visit the trees we harvested from in years past so we can monitor the growth and see how they responded to our pruning.
For the various Sages we use in our products, we trim the clusters at the green stem above woody section—if you harvest below the green stem area, you kill the stem, if you harvest above it, two or three new clusters will appear the following year where you harvested one.
